“Antigone Vietnam” to attend France’s Avignon Festival

“Antigone Vietnam”, a joint product of the Central Tuong Theatre and France’s Monte-Charge Theatre, presented in Hcm city at the Hue Festival 2008 and in Hanoi on June 17, will attend the Avignon Festival in France in July 2008.

“Antigone Vietnam” is a historical drama by French script writer Alain Destandau, who is also Director of the Monte-Charge Theatre. The drama features Vietnam’s tuong and France’s mask drama arts. It is one of the activities under the 2nd “French Spring” festival in Hanoi

During their trips to theatres in Asia five years ago, Alain Destandau and his wife, Bestina Schneeberger, visited the Central Tuong Theatre, which paved the way for cooperation between the two sides. The two theatres cooperated in two dramas, entitled “Sandy circle” and “Antigone Vietnam”.

Over 100 performances of “Sand circle” were staged in Vietnam and France while “Antigone Vietnam” was presented in Hcm city at Hue Festival 2008 and will go to Avignon Festival in France next month.

“Antigone Vietnam” is based on a story about Lady Antigone in Europe. The drama is about Tiane, a nice simple girl born into a royal family. Whatever happiness she enjoys as a child is stripped from her once the war breaks out. Her father and brothers all die, leading to her uncle appropriating the throne. Since women were not allowed to bury men at the time, she accepts sacrificing herself to bury her brother. Just as she faces death, doves that she previously liberated from their cage come back to save her.

The 60-minute drama is a perfect combination between the Vietnam Tuong Theatre and the Monte-Charge Theatre. In this drama, Vietnamese and French artists use their own languages.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism presented Alain Destandau and his wife Bestina Schneeberger with the “For cultural, sports and tourism service” medal.
