Documents have been submitted to the United Nations Education, Scientific and Educational Organisation (UNESCO) to ask for recognition of Cat Tien National Park as a world natural heritage site.
The park, covering parts of southern Dong Nai, Binh Phuoc provinces and the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, was recognised as a world biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2001.
According to Mr Nguyen Duy Khang, vice director of the Cat Tien National Park’s Centre for Ecotourism and Environment Education, if the park is recognised as a world natural heritage site, it will be an attractive destination for the world’s researchers and international tourists.
In 2007, Cat Tien National Park welcomed around 15,000 visitors, scientific researchers, 15% of them foreigners.
