Malaysian golfer Nicholass Chee Yung Fung has brought home the trophy of the first-ever Vietnam Amateur Open Tournament at the Dalat Palace Golf Club in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong.
The 18-year-old defeated the nearest challenger and fellow Malaysian Akhmal Tarmizee Mohd Nazari as he scored a final-round 71 for an 11-un-der-par total in Vietnam's biggest tournament for both men and women that ended Sunday.
"This (win) does everything for me," he said after receiving the trophy of the four-day tournament organized by the Vietnam Golf Association (VGA). "I was up against really good players. Now I know I have the game."
Vietnamese golfer Tran Le Duy Nhat finished third, 12 shots back of the champion but two strokes better than Nguyen Thai Duong, who came fourth.
Two-time Vietnam National Championship winner Huynh Van Son and the Philippines' Jerson Balasabas tied for fifth, at 8-over-par for the tournament, whose awards presentation was broadcast live on Vietnam Television (VTV).
In the inaugural Vietnam Ladies National Championship, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Dung took the women's title with a final-round 10-over-par 82. The runner-up was Ngo Vinh Hoa and Tam Taylor got the third place.
Like the men's event, the women's tournament was organized by the VGA, which was formed just last year and is responsible for uniform course ratings, handicapping services and nationwide tournament administration.
Previously called the Vietnam National Championship, the Vietnam Amateur is open to any non-professionals living in Vietnam, Vietnamese non-professionals residing abroad and one non-professional under 23 from other ASEAN nations. They must also have handicaps of 9 or better to be eligible.
