The Central Highlands Gong Festival will be held in Pleiku, Gia Lai Province in March, according to the Institute of Art and Culture of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
This will be the biggest–ever highland gong festival with the participation of 11 troupes representing hill peoples such as the Muong, Cham, Khmer and Tai from Lam Dong, Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Dak Kak and Dak Nong. There will also be artists from Laos, Cambodia, China, Thailand, and Japan.
The event will include seminars on preserving and promoting gongs, as well as unique performances and photo exhibits of gongs.
Highland gong culture is recognized as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by Unesco, due to its attraction to the audience and the skill required for its performance.
Gongs are played in the highlands provinces of Dac Lac, Dac Nong, Kon Tum, Gia Lai and Lam Dong. They can be made from bronze or silver and are well-known for their outstanding value. The music is regarded as a privileged language bridging humanity and the supernatural world.
