HCM City attracts 1 million foreign visitors in four months

Ho chi minh city welcomed 230,000 foreign visitors in April, an increase of 15 percent from a year ago, according to the Municipal Tourism Department.

Most of the visitors came from the US, Japan, Taiwan (China), Australia, the Republic of Korea, China, France, Singapore, Malaysia and the UK.

As a result, a total of 1,070,000 foreigners visited the city in the past four months, marking a year-on-year increase of 18 percent and fulfilling 36 percent of the yearly plan. Total revenue also increased by 25 percent, reaching VND9.3 trillion.

In the same period, about 270,000 Vietnamese undertook outbound tours through Tan Son Nhat International Airport. Their favourite destinations included China, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia.

Dong Thi Kim Vui, director of the Municipal Tourism Department says that to promote tourism, the city has published a City Guide in Korean, Russia, Chinese and French, and a calendar of major tourist events in 2008.

According to the director, tourism information kiosks in the city centre and at Ton Son Nhat International Airport have been extremely busy. In addition, 54 shopping centres and 23 restaurants have so far met the city’s criteria for providing good services.

The recent HCM City Tourism Festival attracted 81 enterprises from 15 cities and provinces across the country. During the event, travel agencies had the chance to meet directly with consumers to market their products.

The city is preparing to hold a southern fruit festival, scheduled for this June, and an international tourism expo (ITE) to be held this September.
