Close to 330,000 foreign tourists visited Ho chi minh city in the month till Tet, up 17 percent compared with the same period last year, according to the HCM City Tourism Department.
Of the total influx, 150,000 were overseas Vietnamese returning home for Tet (lunar new year), which runs from Feb. 6-9, said the department.
Most foreign visitors were from the US and Japan , followed by Taiwan , the Republic of Korea , Australia , China , France , Singapore , Malaysia and Canada .
Tourism enterprises are trying to diversify their services by increasing promotions as well as opening more stores and restaurants. HCM City currently has 54 stores and 23 restaurants, which target tourists.
Also in January, some 70,000 passengers departed Tan Son Nhat Airport to travel abroad, up 10 percent compared with the same period in 2007.
Meanwhile, more and more Vietnamese are traveling around their own country.
According to a recent survey by the daily Sai gon Giai Phong, 58.9 percent of those surveyed said that they save money each year for travel within Viet nam .
The most attractive local destinations are Ha long bay Nha trang Phu quoc Hoi an Ha noi Hue Da lat Con Dao and Mui ne whereas the most attractive foreign destinations are mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia.
HCM City is forecast to receive 3 million international tourists this year, 11 percent over the same figure in 2007.
The city’s tourism sector is expected to bring in 29 trillion VND (1.8 billion USD) this year, 20 percent more than last year, said Dong Thi Kim Vui, director of the city’s tourism department.
