More than half a million Hoa Hao followers from southern provinces attended the 69 th anniversary of the establishment of the Buddhist sect that was held at the An Hoa Tu Temple in the Mekong delta province of An Giang on June 21 or the 18 th day of the fifth lunar month.
The An Hoa Tu Temple is the place where Prophet Huynh Phu So officially announced the establishment of the Hoa Hao Buddhism in 1939.
Vice Director of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs Nguyen Huu Oanh commended Hoa Hao believers’ contributions to national renewal and construction, their solidarity and respect to the Party and State’s policy while practising their religion.
On this occasion, the headquarters of the Hoa Hao Buddhism’s Executive Committee was inaugurated in the An Hoa Tu Temple.
The headquarters were built at a cost of 2 billion VND donated by its followers Huynh Minh Ly in Chau Doc commune and Nguyen Binh Xe in Chau Phu district.
Hoa Hao followers have involved in social charitable activities by contributing 50 billion VND each year to build gift houses, repair and build bridges, upgrade rural roads and to assist eye surgery.
The Hoa Hao Buddhism, a reformed Buddhist sect, has established 293 places of worship and an executive board with more than 2,000 members.
An Giang province has more than 800,000 Hoa Hao followers, accounting for more than 35 percent of the province’s population, and 122 worship places.
