Thua Thien-Hue – The Hue Monuments Conservation Centre has carried out a series of restoration projects on the imperial citadel to prepare for the upcoming Hue Festival 2008.
The restoration on Long Duc, Long An and Voi
Re palaces, Minh Mang, Tu Duc, Dong Khanh, Thieu Tri and Ho Quyen royal tombs,
Thai Binh Lau (palace), Gia Long stele house and Hiem Duc Mon (gate) cost
hundreds of billion VND.
The centre had previously provided 1.62 million
USD (26 billion VND) to restore Thien Mu pagoda, one of the citadel’s most
attractive features.
Some of the funding was granted by international
organisations including Monotsukuri University and Waseda Heritage Institute of
Japan who donated 1.2 million USD to upgrade the Long Duc palace. Germany ’s
Leibniz Association outlaid 355,000 Euro for the restoration of wall paintingsin
An Dinh palace.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organisation (UNESCO) also granted close to 155,000 USD to support the first
training project on Hue royal music.
Hue Monuments Conservation Centre
Director Phung Phu said with these efforts, the Hue imperial citadel has had any
danger removed and proved its inherent beauty and history. The historical site
brings in around 2.8 million USD (45 billion VND) in tourism revenues each year.
