La Phu’s pig parade honours tutelary god

16 standard pigs on February 19 (the thirteenth of the first month of the Lunar New Year) were paraded to La Phu’s communal temple for the worshipping of the tutelary god.

These pigs, which were selected carefully, weigh around 200 kilograms each. They were washed and decorated colourfully in the morning on February 19. At 18.00, they were brought to the communal temple of La Phu commune, Hoai Duc district of Ha tay province.

Best pigs were chosen and awarded. Nguyen Van Tien, a pig breeder of Quyet Tien hamlet, said that the prize brought great spiritual value to the winning hamlet.

The ceremony worshipping the tutelary god started at 24.00 on the same day. Six hours later took place a pig sharing ceremony for village households with the aim of sharing luckiness and happiness among the villagers.

The pig parade is a long-standing tradition of La Phu commune. It is a chance for villagers to thank La Phu village’s hero who gave a feast to his troops before going to the front. The hero then was called the tutelary god. Since then, his death anniversary has been celebrated every January 13 of the Lunar New Year.
