Mekong Delta Tour
Mekong Delta in a Tour
The Mekong Delta is a major rice granary where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea through a network of distributaries. As all deltas, it receives the bounty of silt from the upper Mekong, and as such is a very rich and lush area, covered with rice fields. It is the place for timeless sceneries of farmers planting or harvesting rice.
The Mekong runs into
Viet nam
in two main rivers, Tien and Hau, creating a maze of small canals, rivers and arroyos interspersed with villages and floating markets.
Do you want to get a glimpse of the delta region? A six-day trip can be a way. The
Ho chi minh
City-based Ben Thanh Tourist Company has launched a six-day tour to 11 provinces in the delta – Long An, Dong Thap, An Giang, Kien Giang, Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Hau Giang,
Can tho
Vinh long
and Tien Giang.
The provinces have things in common such as floating markets, waterways and orchards. However, they are also home to different tourist sites for visitors to explore, such as cajuput forest in and the Seven Mountains in An Giang,
Lotus
ponds in Dong Thap, Mac Cuu Tomb in Kien Giang and Ca Mau Cape.
Mac Cuu was the founder of Ha Tien Town. According to the history of the making of the town, in the late 17th century, a Chinese man named Mac Cuu was dissatisfied with the Qing Dynasty and traveled southward. Coming to the place, he resettled and started a community, then established Ha Tien. The Mac Cuu Tomb was built about 300 years ago. Carved figures of dragons, phoenixes, lions and guardians decorate the tomb.
The Ca Mau Cape, which is the nation’s southern tip is in Mui Commune, Ngoc Hien District, about 100 kilometers from Ca Mau City, is a strip of wetland which projects out into the sea, resembling a long pier. Every year the western coastline of the Cape advances dozens of meters.
The only way to reach to the Cape is by boat and visitors will experience walking in the mud in the wetland area, therefore shoes are needless. Many visitors to the Cape want to touch the pillar telling this is the nation’s southern tip.
Ca Mau is next to Bac Lieu Province, where a highlight is the Cong Tu Bac Lieu (Bac Lieu Dandy) Hotel. In the past it was the residence of Tran Trinh Huy, a wealthy landowner well known for his lavish lifestyle in the southern region in the early 20th century. Called cong tu Bac Lieu, he was the son of a mandarin regarded as the Mekong Delta’s richest person.
Though the French villa has been converted to the hotel and renovated many times, the original architecture remains. In addition, tourists can spend a little time at the beach of Bac Lieu, about seven kilometers away. The coastline here does not have cliffs and white sand like the seaside cities of Vung Tau,
Nha trang
or
Phan thiet
because of the silt from the Mekong River.
Orchards are everywhere in the Mekong Delta. At any of them, guests are often offered with a variety of fruits like orange, pineapple, dragon fruit, banana, durian together with tea and some cakes. While tourists are enjoying them, a local music group in traditional clothes often performs southern folk songs in Vietnamese.
The six-day package tour costs VND3.62 million per overseas Vietnamese traveler, VND4.22 million per foreigner. The tour operator will refund VND460,000 to those who prefer to arrange their own meals.
