The Vietnamese government permitted Tien Phong Newspaper and the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) to host Miss Asia 2008 pageant but the hosts have withdrawn from this project.
Deputy
Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan last October approved Tien Phong and BIDV’s
scheme to host Miss Asia beauty contest in Vietnam this year.
However,
Tien Phong Newspaper’s Chief Editor Duong Xuan Nam has said that they decided to
not host this event because of failures in negotiations with the Hong Kong
partner.
According to Nam, they sent a mission to Hong Kong to
negotiate with Miss Asia organisng board on details but after three months of
talks, the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement. The major reason, Nam said, is
that the host country has few interests.
“We
considered this is a chance to promote Vietnam’s image so BIDV decided to
finance US$2.5 million for this contest. But the things that Vietnam can earn
from this event are too small compared to our investment. We can post only 1-2
advertising panels in Hong Kong, have to buy broadcast rights, while the time
for advertising Vietnam on TV is short,” Nam said.
Moreover, Vietnam’s role in organisational tasks would
have been limited because the Hong Kong partners wanted to bring their entire
team to Vietnam, from the jury to the MC. The host country is simply the
contributor of money, place and infrastructure for Miss Asia contest.
Miss
Asia is an annual event held by Hong Kong’s ATV channel. Last year Vietnamese
model Huong Giang took part in Miss Asia 2007 in Hong Kong.
