The ancient Nam Dan rock carvings in Ha Giang Province have been recognized as a national treasure by the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism.
Believed to be 2,000 years old, the 80-odd carvings in Nam Dan, a commune in
Xin Man District, depict human feet and hands, female sex organs and other
shapes.
They show a remarkable similarity to the ancient carvings
around Sapa in neighboring Lao cai Province, which were written about and
publicized in 1925 by the French scholar V. Goloubew.
When Professor Dang Nghiem Van and his fellows from the
Archaeology Institute visited Nam Dan in 1975, they discovered hundreds more
carvings in the area.
Since then numerous teams of Vietnamese researchers have
traveled there to study the ancient markings and understand their meaning and
significance.
