The Nam Dan ancient stone ground in Nam Dan commune, Xin Man district, northern mountainous province of Ha Giang, has been recognised as a national relic. This is the second ancient stone ground (after Sapa) discovered in Vietnam and registered as a national relic.
Nam Dan
ancient stone ground is located in a vast valley, surrounded by high mountains.
The local people call this area Na Lai (field with scripts) because some blocks
of stone along Nam Khoong have patterns and scripts. In 2004, the Vietnam
Archaeology Institute and Ha Giang Museum cooperated to conduct a survey in Xin
Man and unveiled the ancient stone ground there.
Archaeologists have temporarily divided patterns on
stone blocks there into seven groups: geometrical (circle, square, rectangle),
square and circle-shaped patterns, parallel lines, symbols of genitalia, human
feet, human figures, and undetermined patterns.
According to Dr. Trinh Nang Chung from the Vietnam
Archaeology Institute, ancient people used iron chisels and hammers to make
these patterns. This ancient stone ground is valuable for research because the
site has not been touched by humans yet.
Archaeologists said patterns on stone blocks in Nam Dan
are more than 1,000 years old and the site may have a connection to the stone
genie worshipping custom of prehistoric man in this region.
