Charlene Brown’s hand-made postcards feature water-colour landscapes throughout the world, including Vietnamese scenic spots.
As a
painter who loves travelling, Brown began to write about her journeys around ten
years ago, after she and her husband left their hometown, wonderful Rocky in
Canada. The couple’s journey around the world started in 1989 when they read a
small ad of Emirates Airways on pilot recruitment.
Brown’s
husband is an experienced pilot and he was recruited by Emirates Airways. The
couple settled in Dubai in the mid-1990s, where Brown became a journalist. She
wrote artistic critiques and travel stories for English newspapers in Dubai. The
couple returned to Canada after Brown’s husband retired.
According to Brown, the hand-drawn postcards show
individual hallmarks and they were gifts for friends and relatives.
“I’m a
painter and I was anxious about what I would draw on my postcards when I came to
Vietnam. Actually, Vietnam is an interesting surprise. Hcm city is very
attractive for its architecture. It is very difficult to see rococo-style villas
of light grey colour, pagodas and churches with high bell-towers in one city
like HCM City. I also targeted writing about landscapes in northern Vietnam,
including Hanoi’s lakes, the sea landscape of the Tonkin Gulf, the mountainous
region and Vietnamese contemporary art,” Brown said.
