It’s Chilean Week with lots of food, music, dance and business talk at the Sheraton in Ho chi minh city all this week.
The famous Chilean cook Pilar Rodriquez is serving up the culinary delights
and the wine of his native land, while on the entertainment front there is
Chile’s traditional dance Rapa Nui to watch and enjoy until Sunday.
Trade promotion is a major purpose of the event, with
seminars for Vietnamese and Chilean companies on Thursday and Friday organized
by Chilean export promoter ProChile, the Export Promotion Bureau of Vietnam’s
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and
Industry.
Trade between Chile and Vietnam rose seven-fold from 2002 to
2007, and was worth US$163 million last year, according to ProChile.
Chile sells mainly copper, pine, fish oil, salmon, pulp and
wine to Vietnam, and buys Vietnamese coffee, footwear, shirts, printers and
porcelain ware in return.
ProChile’s director, Ms. Alicia Frohmann, says she hopes
that Chilean Week will be an opportunity for her people to learn more about the
culture, history and people of Vietnam, and that it will foster trade between
the two nations.
Ho Chi Minh City is the fourth Asian city to host Chilean
Week this month. Previously it was held in Seoul on April 10 and 11, Beijing on
April 14 and Shanghai from April 14 to 16.
