Taking a leaf from Thai tourism pros

Travel companies in Viet nam can learn much from their Thai counterparts, particularly in organising conferences and tourism promotion, according to an official with the Viet Nam Administration of Tourism (VNAT).
Nguyen Minh Duc, head of VNAT tourism promotion department, speaking at the Thailand Travel Mart in Bangkok last week, said the Thai tourism authority had allowed Viet nam and a few other countries to promote their tourism products at the fair.

"We have had an opportunity to contact many Thai tourism companies but also hundreds of buyers who come to the event from many countries," he said, adding that hundreds of people had made inquiries about the Vietnamese market.

Duc said old and new travel agencies helped each other in Thailand, contributing to a cohesive, well co-ordinated market with uniform standards.

"This is a good example for Vietnamese companies to follow," he added.

In recent years, many Thai people have begun to travel to Viet Nam.

Provinces in the central region of Viet Nam are the most popular, as they are starting points for both the north or south.

Roads and Airways linking Viet Nam with Thailand and Laos have also made the central region the best option for Thai tourists.

The co-operation between Thailand and Viet Nam and other countries in the Mekong subregion has improved as well.

Viet Nam, Thailand and other countries in the subregion plan to set up a regional tourism centre in Bangkok.

Thailand and Viet Nam organise many tours to these countries and to Laos, with caravan tours to Thailand and Laos being the favourite among Vietnamese tourists. Many Thai tourists also prefer travelling to Viet Nam via caravan tours.

The number of Thais travelling to Viet Nam has increased sharply in recent years but has not grown as much as predicted, partly due to a lack of tourism promotion.
