Ha tay Province greeted more than 20,000 tourists to take part in Thay Pagoda Festival on April 10 (March 5 of lunar calendar.
The festival is held every year from the 5th to the 7th of the 3rd lunar month with the main celebration on the 7th.
Many cultural games and art performances will be held during
the festival, including bathing Tu Dao Hanh's statue, presenting
incense sticks, tablets escorting procession, popular opera (cheo),
chess games, water puppet shows, recital of the feats of Tu Dao Hanh
and more.
In particular, tourists will have the chance to enjoy a water
puppetry show portraying the tales of Thach Sanh and Tam Cam, cultural
activities and features of rural life such as farm work, duck tending
and wrestling.
Thay Pagoda often welcomes many cultural researchers, scientists and both domestic and foreign tourists.
Thay Pagoda, located 40km west of Hanoi in a tranquil and
beautiful village, includes Buddhist pagodas and a Taoist Temple, which
is dedicated to Tu Dao Hanh, a Taoist hermit who lived in 12th century
considered one of the karmas of King Ly Than Tong.
The temple preserves many precious worshipping objects like
the statues of Tu Dao Hanh representing the three "karmas" of this
figure, wooden and stone bas-relieves and steles, lacquered statues,
thrones and bells. If you have time, take a walk to reach the higher
pagodas on the mountainside or visit the cave where they have found
some skeletons and ancient coins in early 20th century.
