A new television channel featuring entertainment and advertising programmes called RailTV is now being broadcast on Viet nam railways.
RailTV airs on the 9 North-South and Sai Gon-Hue express Trains
The channel features a wide range of different programmes, including movies, music, comedy, holiday information, sports and news. It also offers educational and health programmes, such as Safety Helmets.
RailTV’s producers co-operated with Viet nam Television to receive and retransmit VTV1’s programmes to rail passengers, said Hoang Tich Tam Trang, managing director of Sen Communications, owner of RailTV.
"We have invested in facilities and human resources as well as computer systems to Air and change programmes and advertising spots meeting the different tastes of audiences," she said.
"Our business comes at a time of fierce competition among TV stations and advertising agencies, and is an effort to diversify entertainment on railways."
Trang also said RailTV’s programmes were designed specifically for passengers aged 18 to 35, who make up nearly 98 per cent of the riders.
"Our young staff have worked hard to edit programmes useful for young audiences because many of them are workers and farmers who prefer watching traditional music, comedy and popular science shows during their journey," she added.
Trang, who began her business in 2005, said most people did not think the railways were an attractive market for advertising. She said she came up with the idea during her Trans-Viet Nam trip in 2003.
"I spent more than 30 hours on a train without a TV. So I decided to create RailTV and find partners," said the Vietnamese-American woman.
Trang said she saw a promising market of nearly 4 million rail passengers a year.
To design and improve the quality of its programmes, RailTV has worked with local and foreign enterprises and groups in electronics, health care products and food.
"Our new RailTV version is a professional entertainment channel with the identity, trailers and pop-ups that other TV channels like VTV have. We hope to change the image of Viet Nam Railways," said Trang.
