Visitors delighted with Vietnam’s Vesak celebrations

Buddhist monks, nuns and believers in Vietnam for the United Nations Day of Vesak have told of their surprise and delight at the scale of celebrations in the country.
“I didn’t imagine how big it is - it is fantastic,” Venerable Bhikkhu Tapassi Dhamma, Charumati Buddhist Mission of Nepal Founder President, told Vietnam News Agency on May 14.

The dignitary, who is visiting Vietnam for the first time, says he and other delegates have been made to feel extremely welcome. “All what you do make me think that this is a successful celebration,” he said.

A Buddhist visiting from the US, Michael Devalve, agrees with the venerable monk and says the use of the National Conference Centre for Vesak’s main celebrations shows the government and people’s support for the event. “I’m deeply impressed by the city, the people. It is wonderful place and I feel something more home than I have in my own country.”

Vietnam Buddhist Sangha Deputy General Secretary Venerable Thich Gia Quang says the Sangha has received great assistance from the government, agencies and localities to the preparations for the event. “I feel a thorough consensus in the preparation process,” said the dignitary.

The Vesak celebration, the biggest-ever international religious event hosted by Vietnam , has attracted nearly 2,000 delegates from 60 foreign countries and territories.

The four-day event, which opened on May 14, is co-organised by the State, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, and the Vesak International Organisation Committee (IOC).
