Tourism with traditional art

In the globalisation period, many countries consider tourism as one of their key economic sectors. There are various kinds of tourism: sport tourism, mountain tourism, adventurous tourism, ecological tourism. In Vietnam cultural tourism plays a key role in the sector.

And in fact, it’s the development of tourism that contributes to the existence and promotion of culture, particularly the traditional art forms such as tuong (classical opera), cheo (popular opera) or water puppetry.

Nowadays, young people are interested in rock, pop music, fashion show, Korean films while ignoring tradional arts. The traditional arts have just a small number of audiences and therefore, have not many chances for performances.

Introducing traditional art forms among domestic and particularly international visitors is seen as a way to preserve the arts.

Only water puppetry is successful in advertising among international visitors. Thang Long Theatre is always full of audiences who come from various countries.

Visitors coming to Vietnam want not only to explore the places of interests but also learn about the Vietnamese traditional arts.

Tourists when coming to the north, apart from visiting Ha long bay they want to enjoy northern art specialities such as cheo and quan ho (love duets singing) but when coming to Hue ancient city, tourists often go to see Royal music.

However, the question is that traditional art forms should be adjustable to the taste of both visitors and young people.

Noh play of Japan is well known worldwide. But to be existed, it is reformed to satisfy Japanese young people while being kept the same to serve art researchers and international tourists.

Vietnamese traditional arts such as cheo, tuong, cai luong (reformed opera) are national treasures which should be preserved. However, they can only be promoted with suitable advertisement, not just under the motto “hidden charm”.

It’s the fast development of tourism that helps promote traditional art forms, a part of Vietnam’s culture.

Many people now find that Vietnamese should play the symphony in order to show the integration into the world. But that’s not enough as when foreigners coming to Vietnam only want to enjoy traditional art forms imbued with Vietnamese identity. Therefore, apart from learning from other countries’ specialties, Vietnam should do more to show its culture to the world. That’s the way to attract more tourists to the country.
