Vietnamese families are struggling to ride out new challenges posed by a fast economic growth and international integration which are threatened many fine traditional values.
Once very close-knit, modern families have become increasing loose as parents come under greater work pressure and children are pressed to study for future success. Family members have little time for each other and even for a family meal.
As a result, the family is growing more vulnerable to breaks-up and social evils such as drug addiction and prostitution. Divorces, separations, pre-marital sex and abortions among young people are increasing, leaving serious impacts on families and society as a whole.
In an effort to preserve the noble value of the family, in 2001 the country made June 28 the Vietnamese Family Day and in 2005, the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat issued an instruction on strengthening the family in the industrialisation and modernisation period.
Annual activities to celebrate family values have received warm response from the public. In a national campaign to build a cultured lifestyle, more than 13 million families, or 73 percent of the total number, have been recognised as living in harmony.
This year, grand family festivals will be held in Hanoi from June 25-28 and in Ho chi minh city from June 27-29 to mark the Family Day, in addition to various activities in other cities and provinces.
