Vietnam to work harder to lure international tourists

Vietnam should host even more food, fashion and food festivals to boost the tourism sector, a meeting in Hanoi has heard.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan said tourism-related authorities should work closely with each other to promote events that are of interest to tourists.

Nhan also instructed the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to make the “National Tourism Year” campaign a priority.

The meeting, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, was called to review the past five years of “National Tourism Years,” which have been held in the provinces of Quang Ninh, Dien Bien, Nghe An, Quang Nam and Thai Nguyen to promote local tourism specialties.

Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Tran Chien Thang said the past five events had not created unique tourism products that appealed to international tourists.

“Many events were not interesting enough and attracted just local tourists,” he said.

“Some local organizers encountered difficulties in infrastructure, personnel and professionalism,” said Nhu Thi Hong Lien, Deputy Chairwoman of People’s Committee of Quang Ninh Province, the first place to hold the event.

“Some organizers only funded the opening and closing ceremonies,” she said.

The Tourism Association said the events seemed to be poorly planned and too focused on music and dance performances.

The local organizers seemed to have forgotten the connection between the events and local tourism companies, an official from the association said.

However, the local “National Tourism Year” events helped lay the groundwork to promote tourism in the provinces, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said.

It also helped to raise awareness of local authorities and residents of the importance of the tourism industry.
